Embracing the Bionic Future: How AI Augmentation Elevates the Modern Organization
By John Lawrence
Though Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around in some form or another for many years, the technology has taken on renewed importance due to recent developments. Businesses have found several immediate benefits from leveraging AI, but the technology can do far more than just content generation or automating simple tasks. Thanks to AI’s varied capabilities, from advanced data analytics to the ability to understand human language, it has the potential to be a transformative force within the modern organizational landscape. The best way to understand that potential is through the lens of the “bionic” model.
First coined by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in 2019, the term “bionic company” refers to an organization that combines human and technology capabilities, with machines serving to unleash the potential of human creativity further. It is a forward-thinking model that integrates human intellect and skill with advanced AI capabilities. Whereas once such possibilities were the stuff of science fiction, recent developments have greatly expanded upon AI’s transformative potential, leading to more valuable collaboration possibilities between man and technology.
Most forms of business AI are limited to “tier-one functionalities”, such as AI assistants that automate repetitive tasks, which limits their potential impact. Yet as AI continues to evolve, it is capable of so much more, handling everything from complex problem-solving to hyper-personalization. Additionally, as the technology gets better at interpreting human interactions, it becomes increasingly valuable as a “partner” for internal teams, enhancing the synergies between human creativity, optimized processes, and cutting-edge technology to drive unprecedented levels of efficiency.
The value potential for adopting the bionic model is significant: according to BCG, bionic companies generate about double the earnings and enterprise value of other companies. Additionally, bionic companies are also much more successful at converting strategy to outcomes, leading to higher growth of total enterprise value. This growth potential stems not only from a willingness to invest in AI technology but from treating it as core to their business transformation efforts. Bionic companies are successful because they see AI not just as a means of keeping pace with technological advancements, but as an opportunity to lead, innovate, and excel in an ever-evolving industry landscape.
Of course, to tap into this potential value, organizations need to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential risks that come with using the technology. AI can help supercharge growth, but without clean, relevant, and labelled data, along with a workforce capable of harnessing it, organizations will struggle to meaningfully utilize it. This requires a more in-depth investment than many CEOs have made at the moment: to build a bionic company, one must move away from experimenting on the fringes, instead implementing responsible AI in wide-scale applications across their entire organization. It is the companies that go that extra mile and find the optimal method for fusing people and technology that will benefit the most in the bionic era.
As we move towards an increasingly digital future, those organizations that can embrace the bionic company model stand to benefit the most. By fostering collaboration between humans and AI technologies, companies can maximize their value potential, driving transformative change at an industry-wide scale. This is not a far-off promise either, as the advanced AI technologies necessary to facilitate the bionic model are already coming to fruition. We at SGK are working to pioneer this new age of human-AI collaboration, empowering our clients to help them distinguish themselves in the world that’s coming.
